This one is painful for me to write. If it’s not clear by now, I am a huge F.C. Barcelona fan. In yesterday’s match against Atletico Madrid in the Champions League quarter finals, the second leg of the tie, it felt like I was seeing ghosts. The same mistake that cost them to lose the first game was made yet again, which ultimately led to a tragic loss.
The big mistake I’m talking about is getting a red card in two both matches of the tie. Both were extremely similar, being a challenge on a player, “denying an obvious goal scoring opportunity.” Now if you don’t know what a red card does in soccer, it sends the player that got it out for the rest of the game, the team is not allowed to replace them, and that player is suspended for the next game.
This meant that in both games, Barca was forced to play 10 men on the pitch, while Atletico continued to have 11 men. This is a massive disadvantage in soccer and makes it extremely difficult to control and move the ball up the pitch. Every pass, buildup, and defensive sequence becomes extremely difficult. And in a situation where they were chasing a goal to just force extra time, the comeback became nearly impossible.
Yes, mistakes happen. But repeating the same mistake, especially in nearly identical situations, comes down to the awareness and discipline of everyone on a team. When a mistake happens, don’t just experience failure, but learn from it and make the necessary adjustments. If nothing changes, the outcome won’t either. So the next time you make a mistake, or see someone else make one, make sure to learn from it so the same thing does not happen again.
