Energy is one of the most underrated factors in sports. It doesn’t show up in the box score, but it can completely change the performance of a team. One player’s effort, attitude, and belief can give a team something to rally around… or bring them down. For great teams, energy isn’t optional, it’s a responsibility.
An easy example of this is Jameis Winston. He’s had some rough patches as a starting quarterback, and has recently seen a more sidelined role. But that hasn’t stopped him from being one of the most energetic and influential players in the NFL. Whether it’s hyping up his teammates, celebrating their successes, or stating his belief during tough stretches, his presence is felt all over.
This is because energy is contagious. When one person shows up with enthusiasm, it raises the level of everybody around them. It creates confidence, builds momentum, and keeps teams locked in, even when things aren’t going their way. This is why having someone like Jameis on your team is invaluable, even if they are not the main contributor to success.
You don’t have to be the star to have the impact of a leader on the environment around you. Your attitude, effort, and energy affect everyone in the room, even when you don’t notice it. How you show up every day matters. So if you notice someone around you is maybe not having the best day, bring the energy and lift them up. It will do a lot more for them than you realize.
