More Talent Doesn’t Always Equal Success

After winning a treble in 2024, with La Liga, Champions League, and Supercopa de Espana trophies, Real Madrid made no roster changes besides adding one of the best players in the world in Kylian Mbappé. This put the soccer world in shambles. Everybody, no matter what league they were in, immediately complained. They were basically already the best team in the world, and adding the best available player made them seem untouchable.

However, their performance since then has been disappointing to say the least. After this insane move, Madrid has actually gone trophyless in all competitions; and that trend looks to continue. With just about a month left in La Liga, the only competition that are still technically “alive in”, they are currently behind F.C. Barcelona by 8 points. This leads many to question, “how did this happen?”

This is obviously not a question of talent; it is a clash of playing types affecting their chemistry. When Mbappé plays, he still performs at an elite level. However, Madrid has performed better as a team when he has been off the pitch. The team before Mbappé had all the right pieces in all the right places. Although they added a great piece to their team, they had to move other pieces around, leading to them not performing the same that they had.

A company can hire the smartest people and add impressive resumes to a team, but their success still depends on the chemistry and how individuals fit in the team. When people are forced to shift responsibilities away from the areas where they thrive to make room for another talent, it can actually weaken the performance of the team, as we’ve seen with Real Madrid. Talent is important and valuable, but if a new piece does not fit into the team, adding them simply for their reputation can create more problems than solutions. Before making any change, no matter how big or small they may seem, it is important to consider how the team’s chemistry and roles may be affected.
